Did You Know?
New York City Hall is the oldest city hall in the United States still serving its original purpose — and it’s been running the show since 1812.
Built between 1803 and 1812 by architects Joseph-François Mangin and John McComb Jr., this masterpiece blends French Renaissance flair with English neoclassical charm. Tucked in the Civic Center of Lower Manhattan, it’s still home to the Mayor’s office and the NYC Council chambers today.
Here’s where it gets even cooler 👇
Timeless Tower:
City Hall’s original clock tower—crafted by Sperry and Company—was once one of the most accurate timekeepers in the world. Fun twist? From the 1840s to 1870s, it doubled as a fire lookout.
Justice, Unmasked:
Look closely and you’ll see Lady Justice atop the building without a blindfold. A bold New York statement if there ever was one.
Ghost Stories, NYC Style:
Rumors swirl of ghostly figures wandering the basement—some even claim to see former Mayor DeWitt Clinton himself (of Erie Canal fame) haunting his old office.
A City Icon Restored:
After 200 years of history, City Hall underwent a $150 million restoration starting in 2003 to preserve every elegant detail. Both the interior and exterior are now designated NYC landmarks—ensuring this legend keeps shining.
Fun fact? When first built, its north side faced a slum—and that side was finished with cheaper brownstone. It wasn’t until 1958 that the marble we see today took its place.
New York doesn’t just have history—it lives in it.
