Did You Know? The Dakota, NYC’s most famous apartment building, is as legendary as its residents!
📍 Built in 1884, this Upper West Side landmark was one of the first luxury apartment buildings in the city. Rumor has it that it was named The Dakota because, at the time, the Upper West Side felt as remote as the Dakotas!
🌿 Hidden behind its grand façade is an exclusive private garden, a tennis court, and even a croquet field—rare luxuries in the heart of Manhattan!
🌟 Over the years, it’s been home to countless famous figures, including John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Lauren Bacall, Judy Garland, and Boris Karloff. In fact, Karloff, famous for playing Frankenstein’s monster, reportedly still haunts the building! 👀👻
🎥 The Dakota’s eerie charm made it the perfect filming location for Rosemary’s Baby, though its residents refused to let the movie be shot inside—only exterior scenes were allowed.
🛑 Getting in isn’t easy! The co-op board has turned down A-list stars like Madonna and Billy Joel. Even Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith were rejected!
